Via Ferrata at Nelson Rocks

Traverse iron rungs, suspension bridges, and cliff-side cables on one of the East Coast's most unique outdoor adventures.

What Is a Via Ferrata?

Italian for "iron road," a via ferrata is a protected climbing route fitted with fixed iron rungs, cables, and ladders anchored directly into the rock face. Participants clip into a steel safety cable with a harness and move along the route at their own pace — no rock climbing experience required.

Via ferratas originated in the Alps and have become popular worldwide as a way for adventurous hikers to experience dramatic vertical terrain with the security of a continuous safety system.

Nelson Rocks Preserve

Just 7 miles south of Seneca Rocks on Route 33/28, Nelson Rocks Preserve is home to one of the only via ferratas in the eastern United States. The preserve sits on a striking Tuscarora quartzite fin — a geological sibling of Seneca Rocks — rising dramatically from the surrounding forest.

The via ferrata route takes you along the narrow ridgeline of Nelson Rocks, with exposure on both sides and sweeping views of the North Fork Valley and surrounding Appalachian mountains. It's an unforgettable experience that combines the thrill of climbing with the accessibility of a guided trail.
